Fixed prepositions,tricky prepositions,confusing repositions

 Prepositions.

In English language  prepositions  are always tricky and confussing.Because prepositions  often defy strict logic, some times the rules which are  applied  for prepositions  do not match the context of the sentence.

Some times context depend meaning are applied

For example see the below preposition uses,

I am at the  hospital. ( Means as a visitor  you are at hospital)

I am in the hospital (as a patient you are in the hospital)

So as per the context we get the meaning and fix the preoitions .

Some times people use ,

I am talking to Maria.( Cause Maria is Infront of me or I use direction

As she is little far so my voice goes to her.

I am talking with Maria.   Here means Maria is  sitting by me and I whisper and talk with her.

we use preposition "of " with afraid.but in other languages commonly it is used with the concept of  "from"

Mostly people use the concept of  from in verb afraid.

I am afraid from spiders. Incorrect

I am afraid of spiders.           Correct.

Or

Smoking is injurious to health.  Correct

Smoking is dangerous for health. In correct.

Some preoitions must be memorized while using it because they are fixed.e.g,

Look for, look into, look after.these are with phrasal verbs.

Some times we say,

He is in the sea. Means swimming

If we use  , He is at the seaside.means he is near the water .

Some times because of direct translation people make mistakes in the use of prepositions.where  learners utilize their own language concept for this it makes confusion.

E.g. in native languages people say,

Married with.

He married with Tania. ( Native speakers) False

He married to Tania  ( in English) correct.

Some native speaker of other language use,

I beleive on Allah( Lord) which is in correct  in English

I beleive in Allah ,( Lord) correct

He belongs from Canada. In correct

He belongs to Canada. Correct

Some times  Regional differences of language.

E g,

British say, at the weekend.

American say, on the weekend.

So what to do?

How to master in prepositions ? They are always challenging, even for the native speakers.

Here are so e tips:

1. Memorize some prepositions which are always fixed,

2. Focus on context and get the concept then. Fix a suitable preposition.

3. Study prepositions in depth, the more you study  the more you get the concept and the best use of prepositions.
