Why is a Gerund used? (Reason)

A gerund is used when an action itself becomes the subject, object, or complement of a sentence.

We use gerunds:

* When we want to talk about an activity as a thing

* When an action is treated as an idea, habit, or concept

* When a verb needs a noun object but the meaning is an action

Example

To read is an action.

Reading is the idea of reading.

I like reading.

(Here “reading” is not an action being done — it is the thing I like.)

Main Uses of Gerund

1. As the Subject of a Sentence

When the action itself is the subject.

Examples

Walking is good for health.

Smoking is injurious to health.

Learning never ends.

2. As the Object of a Verb

Many verbs are followed by gerunds.

Common verbs:

enjoy, avoid, admit, deny, suggest, mind, finish, stop, keep, consider, practice

Examples

I enjoy reading.

He avoided telling the truth.

She finished writing the letter.

3. As the Object of a Preposition

After any preposition, we use a gerund, not an infinitive.

Examples

He is good at singing.

She is interested in learning English.

They left without saying goodbye.

4. As Subject Complement

When gerund renames the subject.

Examples

My hobby is painting.

His favorite activity is swimming.

Her job is teaching.

5. After Certain Expressions

Gerunds are used after phrases like:

It’s no use, it’s no good, worth, cannot help, look forward to

Examples

It is no use crying.

I look forward to meeting you.

This book is worth reading.

6. After Possessive Adjectives (Advanced Use)

Examples

I dislike his smoking.

We appreciated her helping us.

Here the doer is shown by his / her, not by the gerund itself.

7. Gerund with Its Own Object (Verbal Power)

A gerund can act like a verb.

Examples

Reading books improves the mind.

I enjoy writing poems.

She likes teaching children.
