Why is a Gerund used? (Reason)
A gerund is used when an action itself becomes the subject, object, or complement of a sentence.
We use gerunds:
* When we want to talk about an activity as a thing
* When an action is treated as an idea, habit, or concept
* When a verb needs a noun object but the meaning is an action
Example
To read is an action.
Reading is the idea of reading.
I like reading.
(Here “reading” is not an action being done — it is the thing I like.)

When the action itself is the subject.
