Expert rule out toxic threat after Balochistan waters turn green

Marine experts have confirmed that the green colour seen in seawater along the Balochistan coast, including Gwadar, Pasni, Jiwani and Ormara, is caused by an algal bloom and does not pose any toxic danger.

Officials explained that strong winds and sea currents pushed large amounts of algae and decaying seaweed toward the shore, creating an unpleasant smell. The bloom is caused by a single-celled marine organism called Noctiluca, which commonly appears during winter months.

Experts said algal blooms are natural ocean events and have been regularly observed along Pakistan’s coast for many years. However, their frequency has increased due to rising ocean temperatures linked to climate change.

WWF-Pakistan clarified that the bloom is not caused by pollution and has not resulted in fish deaths. The green colour comes from a symbiotic organism inside Noctiluca that helps it grow quickly. The bloom is also known for producing a glowing effect in the sea at night.

Authorities reassured the public that the current bloom is harmless and a normal seasonal phenomenon in the Arabian Sea.
