How WH- questions are changed into the passive voice?
In the English grammar mostly students face hurdles changing Wh question into passive voice. We know this task is little conceptual.
So, first We have to know the rules.
General Rule for Changing WH-Questions into Passive Voice
1.The object of the active sentence becomes the subject of the passive sentence.
2. The verb changes into be + past participle (V³).
3. The subject (doer) is introduced with “by” (if needed).
4.The WH-word is kept, but its position may change according to the new subject.
5. Change of Common WH-Words into Passive Voice
1. WHO
In active voice,
who asks about the doer of an action.
In passive voice, who usually changes to by whom.
Active:
Who wrote this letter?
Passive:
By whom was this letter written?
2. WHOM
Whom refers to the object.
In passive voice, it often changes to who or the sentence is restructured.
Active:
Whom did the teacher punish?
Passive:
Who was punished by the teacher?
3. WHAT
What remains what, but the verb changes.
Active:
What did she cook for dinner?
Passive:
What was cooked for dinner by her?
4. WHICH
Which stays the same, but the noun becomes the subject.
Active:
Which book did he buy?
Passive:
Which book was bought by him?
5. WHEN
When remains unchanged.
Active:
When did they complete the project?
Passive:
When was the project completed by them?
6. WHERE
Where remains unchanged.
Active:
Where did they hold the meeting?
Passive:
Where was the meeting held?
7. WHY
Why remains unchanged.
Active:
Why did she break the rules?
Passive:
Why were the rules broken by her?
8. HOW
How remains unchanged.
Active:
How did he solve the problem?
Passive:
How was the problem solved by him?
9. HOW MANY / HOW MUCH
These stay the same; the noun becomes the subject.
Active:
How many books did she buy?
Passive:
How many books were bought by her?
