Non progressive ( Stative verbs)


Those verbs which are not normally used in continuous / progressive tenses known as non progressive verbs.

Why is it so?? The answer is simple..


Because these verbs describe mental states: believe, doubt, expect, feel (=think or have an opinion), forget, guess, imagine, intend, know, mean, perceive, realize, recall, recognize, recollect, regard, remember, see understand suppose, think (=be of the opinion, have an opinion), trust.

We use these verbs in present simple instead present progressive or past progressive 

Take some example of non-progressive verbs

I know the reality. Not. I am knowing the reality.

I think the government is responsible.

Not. I am thinking the government is responsible.

 (think here = have an opinion)


I believe her. Not I am believing her 
I can understand... Not.   I am not understanding

I like rice...not I was liking rice or I am liking rice.

She needs a cup of coffee. Not she is needing a cup of coffee.

Verbs that express feelings and emotions or effects:  adore, appreciate, astonish, care, desire, detest, like/ dislike fear, forgive, hate, impress, mind, want, wish. refer are counted Non progressive verbs

likewise feel, hear, see, smell, sound, taste are  non-progressive verbs which cannot be used in continuous tense.

 Some other verbs, including, belong to, consist of, depend on, own, possess, and  seem are non-progressive  and the above mentioned rules can be applied for these verbs.

Note. in rare cases (exceptional cases ) we can use some  Non progressive verbs in progressive form.
