In English language there are many modal auxiliary verbs which are used in different places showing or describing different situation or concept.

Uses of modal verb Can

Can is a modal auxiliary verb which is used at many places giving different meaning or concept.

Basically can expresses ability, probability, possibility, request, authority, taking or giving permission and power (in present time)

* Ability: can is used to express Some one's bility 

Basic formula/ structure:

Subject+ modal auxiliary verb+ main verb+ object+.

e.g. she can teach math.

        I can speak nine languages.

        Sara can play the Piano.

Negative sentences:

We put not after the modal verbs.

e g  I can not speak French.

        He can not play the piano.

Interrogative sentences:

 Note : We put modal  verb in the beginning of the sentence and question mark/tag at the end of the sentence.

e g. Can he speak French?

        Can you play this guitar?

         Can she teach math?

*Can is used to express possibility

  It can rain today.

They can come any time.

  * Can is used to express authority:

e.g. The director can kick you out .

         Our principal can change the rules.

* Can is used to express power:

e g.  I can break this wall .

        This machine can drill the  wall.

* Can is used for taking permission:

e g:   Can I use your cell phone?

         Can I sit here for a while?
