Modal auxiliary verb or modal verbs

Modal auxiliary verbs also known as modal verbs.

 

The word modal is referred to the word mood, and auxiliary means supportive.

 

An auxiliary verb also known as (helping verb) is used to change/ affect the tense, voice/ tone or mood of a main verb.

 

The following are called modal auxiliary verbs:

 

Can,

could,

 may

 might

should

ought to

must

had better

shall

will

would

need to

have to

 

Basic structure /formula:

 

Subject modal auxiliary verb base form of the verb (main verb) object+.

 

E.g. He can speak eight languages.

        We should praise them.

         He could swim, when was 10 years old.

         They must submit their fee.

          You ought to love your country.

           They Must inform the police.

 

Note: in some exceptional cases we put third form of the verb or 1.V +ing   in modal verbs sentences.
