 What is a phrase?

A phrase is a group of words that act as a part of a sentence but cannot stand alone in order to form a complete statement,because they don’t have a subject and predicate.

Phrases are groups of words that work together but do not have a subject and a predicate.

Or

A phrase is group of words that does not give complete sense in itself.

Generally phrases  provide  additional information within a sentence .

for example,

 * Your younger daughter

 * On the table

 * A beautiful dress

 *. In the bottle

 * Your black car

 * Under the tree

 * to improve my English

 * Learning English grammar

 * Very politely with elders


The above all group of words are examples 

Of Phrase ,because they don't have any

 Subject and predicate

 It means a phrase is not a sentence on its own, it is only a part of a sentence.

Types of Phrases 

There are multiple types of phrases in the English language.

1. Noun phrase

4.Adverb Phrase

5.Infinitive Phrase

1.Noun phrase

A noun phrase is a group of words that includes a noun (or pronoun) and its modifier.

A noun phrase must include a head noun, which is the central word the phrase is formed around .

Note:noun phrase can work as a subject, object, or complement.

For example,

The famous Singer Britiny exposed the truth.

In the above sentences ,The famous singer Britiny is a noun phrase whereas ,Britani is head noun.

Some more examples ,

*The lady standing over there is my Aunt.

* What is in the large green bottle?

*We can grow then only during the winter.

2. Prepositional phrase

prepositional phrase is a part of a sentence that consists of one preposition and the object it affects. 

The object of a prepositional phrase can be either a noun, gerund, or clause.

For example,

He caught the bus on time.

In the above sentence on time is prepositional  phrase.it consists of a preposition "on "and a noun " time."

* He talked about his favorite books.

* I opened the gifts from my uncle.

* The cat slept under the bed.
