What is a conjunction?
A conjunction is a part of speech that is used to connect words, clauses,phrases, or sentences.
Or
conjunction is a word used to connect two words, phrases, or clauses to form a coherent sentence.
Conjunctions are also called (joining words)
The following are some conjunctions in the English language.
And
But
Or
So
Yet
For
Nor
Although
Because
Since
If
Unless
While
Whereas
Before
After
When
Until
As
Though
Types of Conjunction
There are three basic types of conjunctions:
1. Coordinating conjunction
2. Correlative conjunction
3. Subordinating conjunction
1. Coordinating Conjunctions
There are seven Coordinating conjunctions and we can remember them with the help of mnemonic device " fanboys"
For,and,nor,but,or,yet,so.
For Example,
1. I wanted to go outside, but it started raining heavily.
2. She studied very hard, so she passed the exam.
3. He likes tea, and he also enjoys coffee.
4. You can finish your homework now, or you can do it after dinner.
5. The movie was long, yet it was very interesting.
6. We stayed at home, for the weather was extremely cold
7.He neither called,nor texted me .
2. Correlative Conjunctions
Either/or
Neither/nor
Whether/or
Not only/but also
Both/and
Such/ that
Rather/ then
No sooner/ then
As many/as
For example,
1. You can have either cola or tea .
2. Neither Mike nor his brother attended the party .
3. You must do it,wheather you like it or not .
4.My sister can both read and write Spanish.
5. He is such a talented boy that he can
Pass this test in the 1st attempt .
6. I had no sooner started washing clothes
then the guests arrived.
3. Subordinating conjunctions
Because ,although,if,since,while, until,
While,unless,as,when,before,after,
Whenever , Incase,though,whereas.
For example,
1. I read News paper because it contains many information.
2. The electrician is coming because the main breaker of this building is not working properly.
3.Before we have the quiz program ,let us
revise the entire pages.
4. I like to work in that room even though
It is little cold.
5.Although my sis was ill, she attended her classes .
6. I learnt English when I was in grade 7.
7.Once you see him,you will recognize him.
8. I have no idea how to start the discussion first.
9. Don't play untill work is done.
10. Wherever he worked,he proved his efficiency.
