Prefix,definition,uses,sentences and examples

 What is a prefix?

Prefixes are letters that are kept/ put at the start of words that change their meanings.

Or

A prefix is a letter or a group of letters attached to the beginning of a word that changes the meaning of that word .

For example,

" Un" is a prefix when we keep this prefix at the begining of  word  "happy" so, the meaning of word happy is changed and the new word is "unhappy."

The prefix un- usually means not. For example:

Unlock

Unhappy

Uncomfortable

Unlucky

Unfortunately

Why are prefixes used?

*Expand vocabulary by creating new words from a single root.

*Change meaning clearly (e.g., happy → unhappy).

*Save time in communication by expressing ideas briefly.

* Improve comprehension of unfamiliar words.

*Help in academic and exam learning, especially in English grammar and vocabulary.

* Show relationships such as time, number, degree, place, or negation.
