Uses of modal verb may
The modal auxiliary verb may is generally used to express possibility, permission, or polite requests. The grammarians say that may is more formal than other modals like can or might.
Basic key:
Sub + modal v may + base form of the verb+object+..
e.g. She may call you.
It may rain tonight .
They may join us.
I may not attend the session.
The Uses of "May"
1. To Express Possibility
May is used to talk about things that are possible or might happen in the present or future.
Examples:
It may rain later, so remain here.
She may be at the library .
This may take some minutes to get cold
2. To Give or Ask for Permission
May is a formal way to give or request permission.
Examples:
You may leave the session.
May I borrow your mobile for a call.
3. To Make Polite request
May is used in polite request
Examples:
may we join you ?
may i ask you about this letter?
may i come in?
4. To Express a pray / wish/good wish
may is used to express good wishes or pray
Example,
May you live long!
May you prosper!
5. To Talk About rules or Laws
May is often used to discuss what is a according to rules regulations.
Example,
You may not Park here.
Visitors may not take photos.
may be is the modal verb “may” followed by the main or auxiliary verb “be
May be she is the new manager. ( possibility/ perhaps )
I may be late .
We use "may" with the third form (past participle)"may have + iii form of the verb
to express past possibility, doubt, or a possible past explanation, indicating uncertainty about a completed action, like "You may have visited that place. (We don't know if he actually has visited) or not .
They may have called us because here signals do not work properly.
You may have met him ,his really a nice human.
You may have watched the movie "star tracks" it has a great story.
