 What is an Adverb of Manner?

Definition:

An adverb of manner tells us how an action is done or performed.It gives more information about the verb by describing the way in which something happens or occurs .

In simple words:

An adverb of manner describes the way or style in which an action is performed.

For example:

She speaks politely.

Here the  word "politely" describes the way of speaking of  the  girl . 

My uncle drives carelessly.

Here the word "carelessly "modifies the meaning of the verb drive, that in which manner the person drives.

They played well

In the above sentence the word" well"describes that in which manner they played.

Most adverbs of manners are formed by adding_ ly o an adjective.

For example:

Slow______slowly

Careful_____carefully

Happy______happily

Kind______kindly

Loud_____loudly

But we don't put " ly" in some cases, as they

are exempted of the above rule.

Our team played well.

Not, our team played Welly. ( Incorrect)

He drives fast.

Not, he drives fastly. ( Incorrect)


 Adverb of manner (Position in a sentence)

Usually placed after the verb or object.

Sometimes placed before the verb for emphasis.

Examples:

She writes quickly.

The child left angrily.

He completed the work carefully.

The soldiers fought bravely .


Common Mistakes in Using Adverbs of Manner

1. Using an adjective instead of an adverb

She sings beautiful. ( Incorrect)

 She sings beautifully. ( Correct)

 Mistake occurs when learners forget to add –ly. Because with out " ly" it sounds adjective.

2. Double adverbs

 He ran quickly fast.( In correct)

He ran quickly / He ran fast. ( Correct )


3.  Wrong position in the sentence

He carefully did the work. (awkward)

He did the work carefully.( Correct and sounds well)

Adverbs of manner usually come after the verb or object.

4. Irregular adverbs confusion

 He speaks good. ( Incorrect ) Good is an adjective.

 He speaks well.  ( Correct )

Note:  Some adverbs do not end in –ly (well, fast, hard). So take care while using these

In making sentences.
