Zangi Nawar Lake Noshki: Nature's gift, in the Heart of the Desert

In the vast and silent embrace of the desert lies Zangi Nawar Lake, a magnificent natural wonder that defies the harshness of its surroundings. Nestled in the midst of an arid desert landscape, in province Balochistan ,district Noshki this lake stands as a living miracle—proof that nature always finds a way to surprise and sustain life even in the most unlikely places.
Zangi Nawar is a natural lake that depends entirely on seasonal rains. Once filled, it has the remarkable capacity to retain water for three to four years,as in 2022 monsoon rain it was filled and till December 2025 some water could be seen in water body No.1 and No.3 ,making it a long-lasting reservoir amid the desert. During winter rains and the monsoon season, the lake comes alive, spreading its shimmering waters across an area of nearly 12 square kilometers. The sight of moonlight reflecting on its calm surface is nothing short of magical—an experience that leaves visitors spellbound.
The name Zangi Nawar literally means “the lake of Zangi Khan,” after whom the lake is named. Located approximately 22 to 26 kilometers from the main city of Noshki, the lake is easily accessible via a paved road,crossing cadet college Noshki and Nokjo villege ,allowing visitors to reach this natural gem without difficulty.
The lake is fed by Bor Nala, also known as River Pishin, a seasonal river that brings life to the region. Although the water is salty, it plays a crucial role in maintaining the lake’s unique ecosystem. Zangi Nawar consists of 20 interconnected water bodies, with depths ranging from 21 to 27 feet. As these numbering was carried out by the foreign hunters that they should not diaturbe one an other while hunting .Among them, Water Body No. 1 and No. 3 hold the maximum volume of water and remain the most prominent throughout the year.

Zangi Nawar Lake is internationally recognized as a stopover site for migratory birds, especially those flying from Siberia during winter. Thousands of birds find rest, shelter, and nourishment here, turning the lake into a vibrant sanctuary of wings and songs. Some endangered bird species have also been spotted, making the lake ecologically invaluable.
The lake is also rich in native flora and fauna, adapted perfectly to its saline environment. Although an NGO once introduced fish for breeding, the experiment failed due to the salty nature of the water—another reminder of how delicately balanced this ecosystem is.
Historically, Zangi Nawar has been known as a hunting destination, attracting many foreign hunters who admired and applauded its untouched beauty. It is said that once a foreign hunter visited Zangi Nawar ,when he was leaving,was asked how did he observe the lake? The comment was " If it had been a thing to carry out, he would have taken this to his county" Over the years, several Pakistani actors and actresses have also visited the lake highlighting its fame. Visitors today can enjoy the serene waters through small boats and oar boats, soaking in the silence broken only by rippling water and distant bird calls.
In earlier times, people could barely cross the lake during misty mornings due to high water levels. To improve access, an NGO constructed a structure that now allows visitors to safely reach deeper areas of the lake. A rest house has also been built, enabling nature lovers and researchers to stay and experience the lake at different times of the day.

Inspite of its beauty and importance, Zangi Nawar Lake faces serious threats. Ruthless and unregulated hunting has endangered bird populations.in the old day hunters could hunt once in a week yet with the passage of time this rule was violated .It is the duty of the government to strictly ban illegal hunting and declare the lake a protected ecological site. Equally, it is the collective responsibility of the public to preserve this natural treasure, respect wildlife, and protect its fragile balance.
Zangi Nawar is not just a lake—it is a lifeline in the desert, an oasis for birds, and a symbol of nature’s resilience. Preserving its beauty today ensures that future generations will continue to witness this rare harmony of water, sand, and life.
