Present continuous /progressive tense. Formula, Structure/ Definition, rules and uses

 

The Present continuous or   ( The present progressive Tense )

Nodoubt, The present continuous or present Progressive Tense is used in daily  Spoken English approximately 97 percent. The basic learners learn this Tense very soon. As an English Language fellow it is my Experience that for Students  this tense is so easy and  basic learners make assignments easily.

This Tense has the following uses:

1.      An action that is continue ( in progress)at the time of Speaking.

(  She is watching a Movie now. )

2.Temporary Situation                   (  We are waiting for the principal )

3.Changing Situation                       (  Mom is recovering )

4. an action which is already scheduled ( Decided )   (  She is going to Deliver a speech )

5. An action which is going on (Continue ) but not at the time of speaking

        ( I am Going to gym these days )

 The Positive or Declarative Sentence formation is as below :

   Subject + Helping Verb  is/are/am + Base form of the verb ( 1st form ) + ing +object+.

  For instance :  She is teasing my cousin.

                          They are waiting  for the guests.

                          I am working in a firm these days.

Remember :  Positive/ Declarative/ Affirmative/ Assertive or Stative Means Simple Sentence 

Note 1 :             when make Negative sentence we act upon the following:

                         Subject + is /are/am +not + base form of the verb +ing +Object+.

for instance:          She is not helping the assistant.

Note 2 :           when we make Interrogative( Query ) we use the following:

                        is /are/am +Subject +base form of the verb +ing +object +? ( Question Tag )

Note 3:        When we make Mix up or Informal we use the following;

                  is/are/am +subject +not +base form of the verb+ing+object+?

for instance :       Are they not enjoying the party ?

                            How to use Helping Verbs     ( Is / are / am )

He , She , It, Singular Name ( Third Person )

We put helping verb  ( is )

They , we , You,  Plural Nouns

We  use helping verb ( are )

With 1st person Singular    means  i

We use helping verb   (  am)

 

Remember : we use (ing )with all base form of the verbs but we can not use  ( ing ) with the following verb  cause  they are called  NONPROGRESSIVE verbs .Non progressive verbs are those verbs in which we don't add ( ing

   for instance :

               She is needing a page. ( Incorrect )  She needs a page. ( Correct )

               I am understanding your compulsion. ( incorrect ) I understand your compulsion ( correct )

                when  we use Non progressive verbs we use the present indefinite or modal verbs to express

our sentences.

some non progressive verbs are these: understand, like, believe ,need, want, prefer , see etc
